Spotted Lantern Fly grant created by Star Nigro

Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is a new invasive insect that is native to parts of Southeast Asia. It is a
destructive pest that feeds on more than 100 plant species, including grapes, hops, and tree fruits,
which are critical to New York’s agricultural economy. SLF is a sap feeding insect that feeds in large
numbers, which stresses plants and reduces their ability to survive the winter as part of a grant from
Lower Hudson Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management, Jim O’Connell a Sr. Agricultural
Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County, contracted Star Nigro to create three
carnival cutouts to promote #spottedlanternflyawareness. The first cutout has been made and was used
during Invasive Species Awareness Week in June at the Walkway Over the Hudson. The remaining two
are in progress but once complete they will be gifted to LHPRISM and MyKingstonkids in the meantime it will be on display through the summer at SUNY New Paltz and the Ulster County Fair . Come visit, get your photo taken with spotted lantern fly, and learn more about the new bug in town!
